INFUSING ‘STATISTICAL, DATA SCIENCE AND AI LITERACY’ FOR THE GENERAL LEARNER POPULATION: CONCEPTUAL, INSTRUCTIONAL, AND SYSTEMIC CHALLENGES
Keywords: Data literacy, Statistical literacy, critical interpretation, numeracy
Short Summary: This talks argues for the need to develop ‘Statistics, data science and AI literacy’ (SDS&AI literacy) for the general learner population, not just for upper-end students who may be expected to specialize in data science and related careers. There is a need to prepare all school graduates for effective functioning as critical and empowered citizens, workers, and managers, and to engage as “critical/smart consumers” with the rapidly growing array of services, products, and systems that utilize embedded DS&AI in work related contexts, service consumption contexts, and news and information consumption contexts. Accordingly, the talk will explore three related but separate arenas, involving conceptual, instructional, and systemic issues, where progress has to be made.
