Dynamic fluctuations coincide with periods of high and low modularity in resting-state functional brain networks
Abstract: Highlights•Dynamic functional connectivity is constrained by static functional connectivity.•Our approach detects dynamic connections that exceed an expected range.•Mass excursions occur when many connections simultaneously exceed this range.•Mass excursions are associated with highly segregated and stable modules.•Mass excursions correspond to the dissociation of DMN from other systems.
