Testing PIDza coverage for VIVO at Osnabrück University

  • Abstract: TAPIR is a third-party funded project conducted by TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology Hanover (technical lead) and Osnabrück University (use case) and deals with the research question how reporting in academic institutions can be (partially) automated using open, public research information with persistent identifiers (PID) like ORCID, ROR or DOI. The project focuses on connecting and integrating data from external sources (open data with public license and PID) to internal VIVO systems – e.g. to expand researcher profiles by using external information already published and confirmed by themselves on the ORCID website. Initially, the project team evaluated the number of ORCID registrations over time (last 3 years) at Osnabrück University and then analyzed the ORCID coverage for university researchers and evaluated differences between research areas to identify gaps. The data quality of external data sources (extracted from datacite commons using ROR as the institutional identifier for university affiliation) was compared with an internal data repository (ORCID person lists). Can external data sources e.g. ORCID be used to extend VIVO/CRIS content without making additional effort for researchers?
