Abstract: Highlights•A novel binary operator forms an Abelian Group with a set of elements.•The operator can be used in both conventional and DNA based image cryptosystems.•The cryptosystem can efficiently encrypt images of 8-bit and 16-bit pixel depth.•Encryption is lossless, therefore it is very efficient for medical images.•The operator performs better than conventional XOR or addition–subtraction.
