Abstract: Highlights•Map abnormal behaviors to the states of shadow vehicles.•Introduce the shadow traffic model to simulate abnormal traffic behaviors in a unified way.•Present a traffic simulation framework including an existing traffic flow model and our shadow traffic model.•The runtime overhead of adding our shadow traffic model to traffic simulators is negligible.
