Abstract: Highlights•Head pose estimation (HPE) problem revisited for short and wide range configurations.•Short range HPE best representation: Euler angles (minimal and Gimbal Lock learnable).•Wide range HPE good representation: 6D (continuous in the full 360° rotation range).•Proposed a method for reference system alignment in cross-data set experiments.•New loss function, Opal, developed upon the Geodesic error loss for 6D representation.•New wide range benchmark based on the CMU Panoptic data set.
