Abstract: Highlights•We find a method to transform the maximal inscribed ellipse for an arbitrary quadrilateral to a conditional extremum problem.•We derive the solution for the conditional extremum problem with elementary operations.•We design the construction algorithm for constructing the maximal ellipse inscribed in an arbitrary quadrilateral.
