TL;DR: A paper investigating single-touch gesture performance in one-handed interaction techniques of smartphones
Abstract: Many one-handed interaction techniques have been proposed to interact with a smartphone with only one hand. However, these techniques are all designed for selecting (tapping) unreachable targets, and their performance of other single-touch gestures such as a double-tap, swipe, and drag has not been investigated. In our research, we design two one-handed interaction techniques, Force Cursor (FC) and Event Forward Cursor (EFC), each of which enables a user to perform all single-touch gestures. FC is a cursor technique that enables a user to issue touch events using force; EFC is a cursor technique that enables a user to issue touch events by a two-step operation. We conducted a user study to investigate single-touch gesture performance of one-handed interaction techniques: FC, EFC, and the contents shrinking technique. The result shows that the success rate of one-handed interaction techniques varies depending on the gesture and that EFC has a high success rate independently of the gestures. These results clarified the importance of investigating the performance of single-touch gestures of one-handed interaction techniques.
