Abstract: Highlights•Contribution functions for quantitative bipolar argumentation graphs quantify the contribution of one argument to another.•We present a principle-based analysis of contribution functions.•The principles reflect common sense intuitions, as well as ideas underlying different contribution functions.•None of the covered contribution functions satisfies all principles.•Our analysis can help select the most suitable contribution function based on the requirements of a given use case.
