Abstract: Highlights•A sequential inspection policy optimization framework is developed for hierarchical multistate systems.•Multilevel inspected objects and multiple inspection techniques are involved in this framework.•The sequential inspection policy optimization is formulated by a finite-horizon POMDP.•A tailored value iteration with condensed spaces is proposed to resolve the POMDP.•Several propositions are provided to validate the effectiveness of the tailored value iteration.
