Bridging Literature and Code: Empowering Students to Explore Digital Humanities Through Generative AI
Abstract: This study delves into the novel integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) in digital humanities education, specifically focusing on exploring Tang poetry. The unique pedagogical framework we propose combines Python programming with GAI tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Hugging Face's transformers, fostering a learner-centered and collaborative approach that empowers students to take charge of their learning journey. Despite the inherent complexities of merging literary analysis with technical skills, this framework empowers students from diverse backgrounds to engage deeply with ancient literature through digital means. The study underscores the practical application of GAI in enhancing students’ critical analysis skills, an essential academic skill, promoting collaborative learning, and transforming traditional teaching roles to deliver more personalized education. Through a seven-day exploratory project, participants gained profound insights into Tang poetry's cultural and thematic nuances substantiated by empirical data and visual narratives. This study serves as a blueprint for future educational innovations, showcasing the transformative potential of GAI in digital humanities research and the redefinition of the convergence of literature and technology in educational settings.
