Abstract: Highlights•Decomposing online handwritten mathematical expressions (HMEs) into sub-HMEs.•Generating new syntactically valid HMEs from sub-HMEs.•Expression rate improved by 1.47 & 2.88 points on CROHME 2014 & 2016, respectively.•Expression rate improved by nearly 7 points owing to the enhanced language model.
