Abstract: Highlights:•The effect of the rotation of organic cations to properties of hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites is systematically reviewed.•Flexible structure, intermolecular force, and temperature are three driving forces of organic cation rotation.•The differences between different experimental and theoretical methods for characterizing cation rotation are compared.•Recent measures taken to control the rotation of organic cations to adjust properties of hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites discussed.•The challenges and outlooks towards more efficient and stable hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites are proposed.
