Abstract: ISO/IEC JTCI SC29, also called the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), has been working on a Video-based Dynamic Mesh Coding (V-DMC) standard. In its framework, the compression of texture coordinates is an important component of base mesh coding. In this paper, we present a method to improve the geometry-guided prediction of texture coordinates in V-DMC. The proposed improvement method employed the structural information of adjacent triangles and introduced an encoded vertex to decide the selection of the predicted coordinate instead of encoding a flag to identify it. Moreover, multiple encoded triangles were utilized to conduct the geometry-guided prediction. This improvement can increase the accuracy of texture coordinates prediction. The experimental results on the V-DMC test sequences demonstrate that the proposed method can reduce the bits consumption of texture coordinates by an average of 2.69% in the All Intra (AI) condition. The proposed method has been adopted and integrated into the MPEG V-DMC reference software.
