Comparing experts and novices in Martian surface feature change detection and identification

Abstract: Highlights•This work tests a Citizen Science approach for geological feature change detection.•Experts and novices identified and classified surface changes in imagery of Mars.•Results show that novices can ‘spot a difference’ but not necessarily classify it.•Differences ostensibly linked to feature morphology require further investigation.•Findings concern the future supervised training of change detection algorithms.
