Abstract: Highlights•Permeation is used to evaluate the impact of laser texturing on hydrogen ingress.•Texturing reduces hydrogen subsurface concentration by up to 95% through LIPSS.•The thin duplex oxide layer formed during laser texturing mitigates hydrogen absorption.•The controlled surface roughness limits hydrogen ingress.
