Abstract: Highlights•A two-phase hybrid worker recruitment framework HySelector is proposed, which can embody a tradeoff between the sensing cost and quality and is flexible to adapt to the MCS environment.•An opportunistic worker recruitment algorithm borrowing the idea of influence propagation both in communication network and social network is proposed to solve the cold start problem in the traditional MCS system.•A participatory worker recruitment algorithm based on the sensing subareas clustering is proposed to reduce the computational complexity.
