Funding Area: Capacity building / Construcción de capacidad
Problem Statement: OpenLitterMap works but remains overly academic. Society needs a new more compelling narrative to participate: LITTERWEEK (Location Intelligence To Transform Environmental Reporting With Everyones Empirical Knowledge) will unlock societies data collection capacity.
Proposed Activities: After upgrading some core features on our existing services (code, documentation), we will begin working on the new LitterWeek.org platform, which will target schools and wider society to take the repeatable 1-week cleanup+data collection challenge to map and communicate their impact.
Openness: All of our work, code, trello boards and data is open source under both GPL and ODbL
Challenges: The biggest challenge will be to make this go mainstream but we have already piloted LITTERWEEK with several youth groups and have a growing active global community who can help us demonstrate success and encourage continued active participation
Neglectedness: I am 15 years seeking a single opportunity to develop citizen science. In 2021, I got my first funding ($25,000) from a crypto fund to launch Littercoin but none of this money went to me, I am now €50,000+ in debt as I wrongly believed society would support this type of work to tackle plastic pollution.
Success: At openlittermap, we have achieved over 7,500 signups organically with no marketing budget. With the launch of LitterWeek, I expect signups to increase exponentially as we develop a more mainstream narrative than the academic black+white foundations of openlittermap.
