Funding Area: Community governance / Gobernanza comunitaria
Problem Statement: The problem is limited awareness of rights and understanding of our constitution which is our legal governing document. The entry of the 2010 constitution did not make it easier for it is also drafted in English leaving the community in the dark and powerless therefore missing out in day to day running of the county to officials and elected members. The need now is to fight for a translated draft as into Kiswahili (national language), to educate, sensitize and equip the community on rights and citizen participation. The proposed outcome will be an informed and empowered society who are able to reason and equipped with knowledge, courage, and understanding of their democratic rights.
Proposed Activities: The proposed activities shall kick off at the grassroots level covering the 37 wards of Mombasa County moving up to 6 constituencies after the first induction. The project shall be open for partners cutting across national & county departments and other stakeholders. This program will run for 11 months and we shall work with experts like the attorney general amongst many.
Openness: This project is an open one for all the outdoor activities, forums conferences shall remain public-driven. The community ward representatives shall be voted in by the community within the area in a free process or means reached at a sitting,
Challenges: Intimidation, misinformation and understanding the reason why we need a powerful induction .
Neglectedness: Yes, there are other sources but I have not applied.
Success: Success is 98 percent for we left no one behin, the focus is the grassroot.
Total Budget: $25000
Budget File: pdf
Affiliations: Zero affiliations
LMIE Carveout: Yes, we fit in the category for we are just a small movement that has been doing much on the ground as a volunteer and referred to as a small entity by established organizations that rely on our ability to mobilize.
Team Skills: My team members are resilient volunteers who have helped me drive the vision of unity in Mombasa and beyond. Our capacities differ for we do other things for livelihood sustainability but come together for the interest of betterment. Our experience is in 2018 when there was a standoff at the county assembly whose members resorted to bribes to pass a policy. This destabilized the county's cash flow. We then branded t-shirts and brooms and went to literally sweep them out. The following week, order was restored.
