Abstract: Highlights•Sensitivity of the synchronization likelihood method to outliers is addressed.•A discrete synchronization likelihood (DSL) method is proposed.•The DSL method is sensitive to subtle coupling changes in bivariate setting.•The DSL method is sensitive to sudden coupling changes in multivariate setting.•Connectivity coefficients from DSL method offer better classification performance.
