Abstract: Highlights•Hybrid-dilated-convolution-incorporated Single Shot Multibox Detector is proposed.•HDC-SSD is better at extracting local and detailed information than SSD.•HDC-SSD is superior to SSD in detecting the small and marginal diatoms.•HDC-SSD can detect diatoms in multi-diatom scenario with high speed and accuracy.
