Abstract: This paper provides an alternative analysis of an opaque rule interaction, namely self-destructive feeding, in OT. All cases of self-destructive feedings are interestingly observed at morpheme concatenation boundaries, and all aim to reduce consonant clusters. The edge-specific nature inspired the author to analyse self-destructive feeding in Standard OT by incorporating underspecification and contextual faithfulness. As a result, the opaque interaction can be transformed into phonologically-conditioned allomorph optimisation. Moreover, all edge-related phenomena can be captured together and a type of opacity might be dispensed with.
