Abstract: Developed by the Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) of ITU-T VCEG and ISO/IEC MPEG, the video coding standard VVC version 1 was completed in July 2020. It sets a new benchmark for research and development work in the video industry and research communities. Ever since, the quest for additional coding efficiency continues with the exploration for novel technologies and algorithms in JVET. This paper reviews the future video compression technology beyond VVC currently being studied in two Exploratory Experiments: EE1 and EE2. EE1 focuses on neural network-based video coding (NNVC) technology. EE2 focuses on conventional coding tools, i.e., advanced coding tools (or refinements thereof) based on the block-based hybrid video coding framework.
