Abstract: Highlights•FAIERDet framework is proposed to adaptively enhance insufficiently illuminated images prior to object detection.•It integrates a FIS-based preprocessing and an enhancement module, alongside YOLOv8.•FIS evaluates image’s exposure quality through illumination channel and allows enhancement if exposure is inadequate.•The enhancement module preserves bright regions and color details and operates without paired data supervision.•FAIERDet improves detection accuracy on low-light images while optimizing time by skipping enhancement on good-light images.
