Short Summary: AI and data science topics are currently being discussed in every sector, including the educational sector, raising the question of which skills students should learn and how. Three elements are essential: firstly, qualified teachers who are conversant with relevant data science concepts; secondly, appropriate teaching resources and a guide for relevant data science competencies in schools; and thirdly, a suitable school framework in terms of school subject(s). This work examines these points, focusing on Austria's new compulsory school subject, "Digital Literacy," which integrates AI and data science into the lower secondary curriculum. It reflects on current curricula and presents a preliminary survey concept to examine teachers’ perceptions and self-efficacy in teaching these skills.
