Abstract: Highlights•We design comprehensive methods of encoding spatial information with two coordinate systems.•We comprehensively evaluate the 26 designed local descriptors on four benchmark datasets.•The merits and demerits of all designed 3D local descriptors are summarized and evaluated.•Several new descriptors designed in this paper achieve superior overall performance.
