Abstract: Highlights•This paper provides a fresh perspective on medical image diagnosis from a causal standpoint.•The proposed CaIMA incorporates causal interventions with the multi-region attention framework.•A composite loss is proposed to provide reliable causal visual explanations and enhance model performance.•The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed models are verified.
