Abstract: With this survey paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of geometric light source calibration methods developed in the last two decades and a comparison of those methods with respect to key properties such as dominant lighting cues, time performance and accuracy. In addition, we discuss different light source models and propose a corresponding categorization of the calibration methods. Finally, we discuss the main application areas of light source calibration and seek to inspire a more unified approach with respect to evaluation metrics and data sets used in the research community.
