Abstract: Highlights•Tree species were mapped using Sentinel-2 (S2), PlanetScope (PS), and combined data.•An in-depth comparison revealed the superior performance of S2 data.•The added value of the combined dataset was slight.•The well-known advantages of multi-temporal data were underscored.•Three closely related poplar species were successfully distinguished.
