Authors Biographies: Frieder Leipold and Maximilian Kristen have previously explored the potential of Wikibase in art history (Knowledge for Men and Machines, 2023). Since 2024, they have been contributing to the ERC project ARCHIATER, led by Prof. Chiara Franceschini, together with their colleagues Lily Marie Baumeister and Isabella Limmer.

Abstract:

The ERC-funded project ARCHIATER explores the visual and architectural culture of premodern hospitals in Europe, addressing a key challenge in the digital humanities: sustainable research data. Rather than building a custom, short-lived infrastructure, ARCHIATER embeds its data in Wikidata as a collaborative, long-term Virtual Research Environment.
Using open, structured data models, the project documents hospital typologies, artistic networks, and historical developments. ARCHIATER demonstrates how Wikidata supports the FAIR principles and offers a robust infrastructure for future-oriented humanities research. It also fosters interdisciplinary and international collaboration through shared, multilingual data spaces.
