EMPOWERING STUDENTS IN A DATA-DRIVEN WORLD: EXPLANATORY MODELS FOR UNDERSTANDING DATA-DRIVEN TECHNOLOGIES FROM EVERYDAY LIFE
Keywords: AI and Data Science Competencies, Explanatory Models
Short Summary: Data-driven technologies and applications, particularly those using artificial intelligence (AI) and especially machine learning (ML), play an increasingly significant role in everyday life. Data-driven practices are essential to these technologies. To empower students as critical and informed citizens in a data-driven world, teaching students about these data-driven technologies and their role in students' everyday lives is an important rationale. This aligns with goals of data science, statistics, and computing education at the school level. To navigate the data-driven world, we argue that students need to understand the inner workings of the applications they encounter in their daily lives and develop capabilities to actively shape and design such technologies...
