Abstract: Highlights•MMTE was proposed to study inter-/intra-couplings of cardio-respiratory systems.•Reliability and optimal scales of MMTE were studied by physiological simulations.•Meditation-related differences of the couplings were observed in two directions.•Meditation induced the cardio-respiratory synchronization and sympathetic activity.
