TL;DR: We take a short look at the use of periodic packing for nonlinear, multiphysics simulations.
Abstract: The full DNS of the uniaxial compression of a mock-PBX is computationally expensive. This task requires tracking and updating the contact of a large number of amorphous particles interacting within a binder matrix. As the volume of the sample grows the computational cost quickly becomes prohibitive. This study is an attempt to address the size effect of the representative volume as a fraction of the entire sample in hopes of shedding light onto an optimal representative size. By using LAMMPS to generate periodic packings of sand caste in binder as initial configurations for GEOS-MPM simulations we look for a trend in the respective errors of a nominal stress.
