Abstract: The Global system for Mobile telecommunications (GSM) speech-coding algorithm is evaluated by using the newly proposed Chinese Diagnostic Rhyme Test (CDRT) to determine its suitability for coding Mandarin speech. Experimental results show that the algorithm is not effective for all phonetic features in Mandarin and it reduces intelligibility of sibilated consonants.
