Abstract: Highlights•Surveying literature to highlight the need for cyberbiosecurity.•Performed static analysis on 25 open-source bioinformatics, DNA, genomic software tools and databases to identify vulnerabilities.•Results identify that these tools and databases have poor security hygiene.•Proposed a basic taxonomy of security and privacy issues in bioinformatics tools.•Identify and suggested common mitigation techniques that can implemented for eliminating threats and prevent cyber-attacks.
