Abstract: Highlights•An adaptive block coding-based VRAE architecture, which utilizes entropy coding and zero-valued high bit-planes compression coding to squeeze the image on a block-by-block basis.•We design an effective RDHEI method using the adaptive block coding selection-based technique.•The proposed RDHEI method outperforms some state-of-the-art methods in terms of payload.
