Short Summary: This submission will present ongoing work on assessing students' understanding of machine learning, based on a prior phenomenographic study. The existing model structures students' understanding along two dimensions of several stages of understanding. The model that was empirically derived fits both to modern agent based AI and the two of the Big Ideas of AI4K12. We designed a closed format questionnaire and are currently developing concept cartoons to evaluate their suitability in this context.
